Caring for your Jewellery

Posted on

Looking after and cleaning your jewellery at home is quick, easy and inexpensive but most of all it is critical in maintaining the brightness and vibrancy of your beautiful gemstones and delicate settings.

For most gold, semi-precious gemstone rings, earrings and pendants there are two simple options you could incorporate into your regular cleaning routine.

  1. Fill a cup with warm soapy water, soak your jewellery in the solution for up to 10 minutes then gently brush the stones and settings with a soft toothbrush to remove all grime. Rinse well with warm water then dry with a soft, clean, lint free cloth.
  2. Mix a cup of three parts warm water and one part ammonia (a general cleaning product available at the supermarket), soak your jewellery in the solution for up to 10 minutes then gently brush the stones and settings with a soft toothbrush. Rinse well with warm water then dry with a soft, clean, lint free cloth.

For sterling silver jewellery we would highly recommend investing in a quality silver cleaner and silver cleaning cloth. Sterling silver jewellery tarnishes and oxidises easily and turns a brownish colour when exposed to dust, hand creams, perfumes and other chemicals. Silver cleaners are very effective and should reverse the majority of the tarnish, just be careful and do not leave your silver jewellery in the silver cleaner for too long.

Do not use ammonia solution on pearls, turquoise, sapphires or rubies as the chemical could damage these particular stones.

Your jewellery can easily become quite dirty from everyday wear, dust and grime and from using moisturisers and soaps. As a result your gemstones and diamonds could appear dull, lifeless and grey. It is essential to adopt a regular cleaning practice so your jewellery continues to sparkle forever.
